UBL International Tennis commences

UBL International Tennis commences

KARACHI - Top seed Aqeel Khan and the visiting Sri Lankan players showed early form when they won their respective matches in various categories of the UBL International Hard Court Tennis Championships which got into full swings here at the synthetic courts of Karachi Gymkhana on Monday. 
Aqeel Khan got strong resistance in the opening set before he defeated M Muddassir 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of men’s singles. Second seed Yasir Khan won the first set without conceding a game but surrendered three in the second in his 6-0, 6-3 win over Usman Rafiq. 
Sri Lankan Davis cupper Thangarjah Dineshkant defeated M Mazhar 6-0, 6-0. Another Lankan Madusha Wijesuriya however had to fight hard to clinch victory over Saad Baloch 6-3, 6-4. 
Senior players Rasheed Malik and Hameedul Haq also scored easy victories against Qurban Ali 6-2, 6-2 and Kashanul Haq 6-3, 6-3 respectively. However, the surprise of the day in the men’s signals occurred when Heera Ashiq shocked experienced Nomi Qamar 6-3, 6-1. 
In U-18 singles, Sri Lankans also made their presence felt when two of their players won. Madusha wijesuriya (SRL) beat Amanwal Anwar 6-2, 6-3 and Nadaraja Nishangan (SRL) beat Nazif Ahmad 6-1, 6-0. 
In ladies first round, two matches were played. In the first match, Shahida Farooq Kausar of Subh-e-Nau beat Rubina Israr 6-1, 6-2 and Wanmia Khan scored 6-0, 6-0 win over Uksha Rafiq.
